Instructions

  1. Measure and cut the wood. The size of your frame will depend on the size of your mirror. For a standard 16x20-inch mirror, you will need to cut four pieces of wood to the following dimensions:

    • Two pieces at 16 inches long by 3 inches wide
    • Two pieces at 20 inches long by 3 inches wide
  2. Sand the wood. Sand the edges of the wood to smooth them out.

  1. Assemble the frame. Apply wood glue to the edges of the wood pieces and then assemble the frame. Use a clamp to hold the pieces in place while the glue dries.

  2. Paint the frame. Paint the frame in the color of your choice. Allow the paint to dry completely.

  3. Apply the gold leaf. Apply a coat of Mod Podge to the frame. Then, carefully apply the gold leaf to the frame. Use a brush to smooth out the gold leaf and remove any excess.

  1. Distress the frame. If you want to give your frame a distressed look, you can sand it lightly or use a distressing tool.

  2. Attach the mirror to the frame. Apply a bead of silicone adhesive to the back of the mirror and then attach it to the frame. Allow the adhesive to dry completely.

Your DIY gilded mirror frame is now complete! Hang it in your living room and enjoy the added light and depth it brings to the space.

Tips

  • If you're not comfortable cutting the wood yourself, you can have a hardware store or home improvement store do it for you.
  • If you're not sure how to paint the frame, you can use a stencil to create a design.
  • You can also add other embellishments to the frame, such as beads, crystals, or rhinestones.
  • Be sure to use a level when attaching the mirror to the frame to ensure that it is straight.

Variations

This DIY project can be easily customized to create a unique mirror frame that fits your style. Here are a few ideas:

  • Use a different type of wood for the frame, such as reclaimed wood or bamboo.
  • Paint the frame a different color or use a different type of metallic leaf.
  • Add different embellishments to the frame, such as flowers, feathers, or seashells.
  • Make a smaller mirror frame for a nightstand or vanity.
  • Make a larger mirror frame for a foyer or living room.

With a little creativity, you can create a DIY gilded mirror frame that is perfect for your home.
